Mixael Presents

Tonite we talk about gay marriages, from beginning to end. We ask the question how frail gay rights really are. A recent article in the Times Magazine investigated the state of gay rights across the world and particularly mentioned South Africa too.

Our guest speaker is Johan Troskie, a lawyer with the firm Deneys Reitz in Johannesburg, specialising in tax and commercial law.

So, why am I interested in gay rights? As a member of the gay community, the introduction of the Civil Union Act in 2006 resulted in many questions about pertinent issues being thrown my way. I felt compelled to make a contribution to the debate.

Some background about Johan:

Born and bred in Johannesburg, Johan studied in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg. He has been in commercial law for the last 15 years. He has a wide interest in other fields such as art, music, film, reading and travel. He is also a keen mountain biker and loves the outdoors!

Johan has presented many papers on various legal aspects in South Africa, the United States and Europe and is regularly quoted in local media, academic journals, radio and television.
